TGA (Australia) is considering simplifying access to CBD products.

Medicinal cannabis refers to the use of the cannabis plant for therapeutic purposes, and it contains numerous bioactive molecules, most of which have not been fully characterized yet. Among the extensively studied cannabinoids present in cannabis are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the primary compound responsible for the intoxicating effects of cannabis, achieved by its interaction with CB1 cannabinoid receptors. Despite its intoxicating properties at higher doses, clinical trials have generally shown that THC can effectively treat various conditions such as chronic pain, spasticity in multiple sclerosis, anorexia and cachexia, Tourette syndrome, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Ongoing trials are currently underway to further define THC’s therapeutic potential in these and other medical conditions. On the other hand, CBD exhibits a broad range of pharmacological actions without causing intoxication. Early evidence indicates that CBD may have therapeutic benefits at relatively high doses (300–1500 mg) for conditions such as epilepsy, anxiety, and psychosis. Numerous clinical trials are also ongoing to explore its potential use in treating neuropathic pain, drug and alcohol dependence, and neurodegenerative disorders. In some countries, CBD is readily available in over-the-counter nutraceutical products marketed as ‘wellness’ supplements, containing low doses (e.g., 5–25 mg) with limited current evidence of health benefits. However, over-the-counter access to CBD in Australia is not yet available, though the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA Australia) is considering simplifying access to CBD products. Medical ‘big brother’ saves lives.

By Noah Smith Everyone heard about My Health Record. If you didn’t, it is a Government-run system that stores your health information. It is designed to share information between health professionals with your consent. I cannot tell if there is foul play in that, but I know that Medical ‘big brother’ saves lives. Here is my experience with My Health Record. I had to see a doctor a few days ago. My appointment started well. The doctor was very helpful. He ordered some blood tests and discussed the new medication for me. He asked me about my medications, allergies and blood tests I had in the past. I did not know the answers to all of his questions. For a moment, I thought, how can he prescribe me anything without knowing all of my past health history? The doctor sensed my anxiety and reassured me that with my permission, he could access my health records from other health professionals I had seen in the past. Every Australian has My Health Record. Some refused to have it some time ago. With my permission, he quickly accessed My Health Record and found all he needed to safely prescribe my new medication. After that, I learned how Medical ‘Big Brother’ saves lives. What if I end up at the Emergency Hospital? The doctor explained to me how My Health Record could help.  How would the doctors there know about my past health conditions? They would quickly access My Health Record and find out. Is My Health Record secure? What if some hackers steal my health information? My Health Record is as secure as anything nowadays. The Government promises that all care is being taken to prevent the unauthorised disclosure of my health information. How did my health data end up in My Health Record? Generally, your GP or other health providers would ask if you do not want any of your health information to be uploaded into My Health Record. Finally, you can get more information about My Health Record here. Disclaimer: This information is general in nature and does not replace professional medical advice. Medication safety alert. How reading the leaflet inside the box can save your life.

Did you know that reading the leaflet inside the box can save your life? Each year approximately 1.3 million people in the US attend Emergency Departments because of bad health situations caused by medicines. These bad health situations are called adverse medication events. Most of those events could be prevented by doing a simple thing. Every time you buy any medications at the pharmacy, there is a piece of paper inside the box. An example of such a leaflet is pictured below. This leaflet is called Consumer Medicine Information. Please, read this leaflet carefully before taking any medications. Please ask your pharmacists or a doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
